First Looks: XtremeMac Hybrid + Leather Cases for iPhone 4

Continuing the huge flood of cases we saw last week from XtremeMac for the iPhone 4 are Hybrid ($35) and Leather Case ($35), two twin-material designs that are similar to one another in dimensions. Hybrid combines a silicone rubber outer shell with a clear hard plastic inner frame that shines through geometric holes in the opaque rubber; Leather Case is substantially made from black plastic but has a less than thrillingly stitched leather piece as a dominant feature on its back. Each case comes with a clear screen protector, integrated top and side button coverage, and firm holes for the headphone, mic, speaker, camera, and Dock Connector ports.

How To: Make Any iPhone Icon Retina-ready With iRetiner

If you’re anything like me, you know how disappointing it iswhen you purchase an app from the App Store and you find out the icon hasn’t been updated for the Retina Display. Ok, it’s just an icon — but you know it looks bad and ruins the feng shui of your homescreen. If you care about your homescreen, you know what I’m talking about.

Now, this tutorial is about a tweak available for free in Cydia that does some kind of magic: it turns any App Store icon into a Retina Display-ready icon with just a few taps and a respring. How is this possible? I don’t know for sure, but from my understanding this tweak, iRetiner, takes the original icon and redraws it automatically at a higher resolution. Most of all, it just works.

So, jailbreakers, jump after the break and take a look at how you can get rid of those awful fuzzy icons with our guide. If you haven’t jailbroken your device yet, well, here are a few reasons why you should.

- Install iRetiner from Cydia. You can find it in Modmyi’s repository, and it’s available for free. Restart your Springboard.

- iRetiner is a command line tool, meaning that the current version has no graphical user interface. You’ll have to use it from the terminal. And considering that the MobileTerminal available in Cydia doesn’t support iOS 4, here’s a version you can download and install.

- To install the MobileTerminal you just downloaded:

  • SSH into your device and navigate to /var/mobile (you can use Cyberduck on a Mac, iPhone must have OpenSSH installed);
  • copy the .deb file you downloaded in there;
  • fire up iFile (free trial available in Cydia), navigate to /var/mobile and tap on the .deb file;
  • choose Installer;
  • respring.

MobileTerminal is now installed on your iPhone.

- Open MobileTerminal and type:

iretiner

Then press Enter. Type ‘1″ (without quotes) and then ‘y’ to confirm you want to convert all your icons to a Retina-ready resolution. The icons already updated for the Retina Display won’t change, those that look fuzzy will be updated. At the end of the process type ‘y’ again to confirm a respring.

- Now the icons that were blurry before simply shine on the Retina Display. See my example screenshot below:

The result’s really great. Go download iRetiner from Cydia right now, and enjoy your custom updated Retina icons.

Wooden Blackbox Macbook Cases Show Great Character [Macbookcase]

Wooden Blackbox Macbook Cases Show Great Character

These wooden Blackbox Macbook cases are more stylish than the one's we've seen before and even more detailed. Each case is hand oiled, hand sanded, hand rubbed and individually numbered. It only weighs 1.5 pounds too.

The case does cost $129 (for 13' or 15') but I'd say it's almost worth it. [BlackBox via HypeBeast]

The Glif iPhone 4 Tripod Mount is Now Available to Order

The Glif iPhone 4 tripod mount and stand is now available to order.
The Glif is a simple iPhone 4 accessory with two primary functions: mounting your iPhone onto a tripod and propping up your iPhone at various angles. The Glif is made from recyclable rubberized plastic that feels great and plays nice with your phone, and is small enough to fit snugly in your pocket, purse, or backpack. It has a 1/4"-20 thread that fits any standard tripod or camera mount. The Glif is designed to work with a "naked" (caseless) iPhone 4, to ensure a snug fit.
Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost used Kickstarter to launch the project back in October. The duo raised $137,000 to begin production.
If you order now, shipping will begin in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully deliveries will occur in time for the holiday season.

ZeroChroma’s Vario Case/Stand for iPad – Accessory Review

Looking for iPad accessories? ZeroChroma is a newcomer to the iPad accessory scene. They’ve been in the iPhone accessory business for a while, but now they’re coming with some creative ideas with their Vario for iPad Case/Stand combo.

The Vario for iPad is an interesting new protective shell for the iPad that does several things: it covers the back of your iPad, it includes a 16-position pop-out video stand for your preferred viewing angle, and it also has a 360 degree rotating arm that allows you to use the iPad in different typing and viewing modes.

The case protects the back of your iPad quite well. It’s a hard plastic case with a shock-resistant rubber interior that helps to absorb impacts. However, we would have liked to see a little bit more protection for the sides of the iPad. Some of the sides remain a bit exposed for our liking.

The Vario case is a 16-angle rotating stand that allows you to pick many angles for hands-free movies, reading, typing, gaming, surfing the web and more. It allows you to use the iPad in landscape and portrait modes, by simply rotating the stand arm until it clicks into place in landscape or portrait. We liked the fact that by rotating the stand you can position your iPad in any number of viewing modes.

When typing the anti-slip rubber bumpers and stand tip work very nicely. You can answer emails and play games quite comfortably. Another feature we liked is the slim and fold-flat capability for this case/stand combo. When you’re done using your iPad, you can simply hide the stand within the case. You could also use the case as a reversible screen-shield protector. Pop the case off, flip it, and snap it on the screen.

What we liked: Hard protective case that is very easy to install. The 360 degree rotating arm brings a lot of flexibility to this case/stand combo allowing you to use your iPad in many viewing angles. Given that the stand is integrated into the case makes it quite handy when you need to use it, and it’s quite easy to hide the stand within the case.

What we didn’t like: Would like to see a bit more protection on the sides of the iPad. Some of the sides remain a bit exposed for our liking. Even though the hard plastic case can be used to protect the iPad screen while traveling, in this scenario the back of your iPad will remain exposed.

The price may be a bit steep ($69.95) for some, although some could argue that it competes with Otterbox’s Defender iPad Hard Case, which sells for a higher price ($89.95).

To buy or not to buy: The Vario for iPad features a very attractive design, and is quite handy for folks that would like some protection for their iPads and at the same time would like to have a case/stand combo. The design definitely provides you with multiple viewing and typing angles for your iPad. The price may be a bit steep for some, but perhaps, the design flexibility and functionality may be just enough for some to give it a try.

Casemate's iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation baking

As the everlasting debate rages on, and brains continue to / not to melt with every passing phone call, Casemate's taking no chances whatsoever. By collaborating with Pong -- a company that makes its ends by "protecting users of cellular telephones from the potentially harmful effects of radiation exposure" -- the Bounce was born. For all intents and purposes, it's a simplistic form-fitting iPhone 4 case (BlackBerry models are en route), available in a foursome of hues and tested to reduce normal cellphone radiation (SAR) by at least 60 percent. Purportedly, the case can redirect your phone's electromagnetic energy away from your head... right into the brain of some lucky chap sitting next to you on the subway. But hey, at least it serves another purpose: solving that blasted iPhone 4 reception issue. Two birds, one $49.99 dent in your credit card. Propaganda vid is just past the break.
