Phone Disk: Mount & Browse Your iPhone In The Finder, No Jailbreak Required

They say one of the biggest advantages of jailbreaking your iPhone ( or iPad) is that you gain root access to the device. By root access they usually mean that the filesystem becomes visible to the end user, thus allowing people to play around with the device’s system files and modify stuff. From graphical modifications to file browsers available in Cydia to extra functionalities granted by access to hidden folders, root access is one of the most important aspects of jailbreak.

But it turns out, jailbreak isn’t required to access the iPhone’s internal files in the way most people would need: Phone Disk, a Mac (and Windows) app gone free until December 1st, lets you mount and browse your iDevice directly in the Finder without the need to jailbreak anything.

Once you download and install the app (which is very lightweight and truly unobtrusive) you’ll be  asked if you want to open Phone Disk when the computer starts (I recommend this option if you usually keep your phone plugged in at your desk) and if you want to gain access to the “real root”. Now, this needs an explanation. By default, Phone Disk lets you browse your app folders and photos, which is perfectly fine for most users. If you install an additional hack called “afc2add” from Cydia, though, you’ll have full access to the root. Being able to browse photos and apps from the Finder is incredibly useful anyway.

First, you can copy images from and to your device; it’s convenient and you won’t have to use iPhoto, as everything happens within the Finder. If you really want to have a perfect Mac – iPhone integration, you can even set up Folder Action Scripts to automatically resize photos once they’re dropped in the iPhone’s media directory.

Then you have access to application folders. Why would you want to access these? Well, manually backing up app databases is an idea. As you may know, iOS apps are backed up by iTunes in a backup file you can’t browse but just use as a restore unit. With Phone Disk, you can easily create a copy of an entire app folder, save it somewhere on your computer and next time you’ll need to restore an app, copy it back inside.

You can do even more with access to app folders. Some apps like iFiles, for example, keep a very basic folder structure inside a “Documents” directory and if you had direct access to it you could create, delete, move and copy files from your computer. As long as apps have a folder structure and aren’t based on a .sqlite database (a close and easily corruptible system you don’t want to mess with unless you know code), you can copy files around just fine. Phone Disk lets you do that with a few clicks as if the iPhone was another USB stick attached to your computer. Oh, and what about aliases pointing to an app folder? Yeah, you can create those too, for an even easier desktop access. Another trick: open the Inspector (CMD+I) on app’s folder, select the icon, copy it (CMD+C) use it somewhere else on your computer by pasting it on another folder or application.

(above: full root access)

The possibilities offered by an app that grants filesystem access to your iPhone are endless. By effortlessly integrating an iOS device with Mac OS X –  and if you time and patience to play around with it –  you can get a lot more things done faster, easier, better. Plus this app is free until December 1st. Go get it, and if you come up with some neat hack or tutorial about iOS living inside OS X – you know where to comment.

PhotoBox 1.0

Category: Photography
Price: Free, Version: 1.0
PhotoBox

Description:

With PhotoBox, quickly check the technical quality of your pictures analyzing color, exposure and sharpness and hook your iPad up to a projector to show your photos on the big screen for a deeper analysis and critique.

Why is it free?
Our vision is to turn PhotoBox into your personal on-set digital photography assistant. For this it is missing a lot of features we would like it to have. We plan to implement these in a forthcoming version based on the new iOS 4. Meanwhile we'd like to get this into your hands as easily and quickly as possible so that you can give us feedback about your wishes for that next version. This is why we decided to make this version free. (We expect to charge for the next version...) Please use the form on our website for feedback.

Check your images
Designed as a tool for photographers on the go, PhotoBox analyzes the technical quality of photos imported from camera to iPad via the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Photos can instantly be analyzed in terms of exposure, focus, color, and overall look and composition, making sure that you do not leave the shooting location without a usable photo.

Workflow
• Shoot pictures on your camera and transfer them to the iPad using the Camera Connection Kit. (You can also use other means to get the photos into your iPad Camera Roll.)
• Launch PhotoBox and import the images you'd like to analyze
• Tap to select an image and get the color and luminance histogram
• Double tap to zoom into an image
• Use the buttons in the button bar to turn on over- and underexposure detection

Hook up to the big screen
Connect your iPad to a VGA projector or large screen using the Apple iPad VGA cable and tap on an image to have it instantly appear for all to admire or discuss. To show a different photo, simply tap on its image on your iPad screen. No need to put images in a sequence or wait for a slideshow to show the photo you want. Pan and zoom on the iPad and the image on the big screen will also be panned and zoomed.

BOLT uses almost no RAM memory. Why does that matter to me? Try to play a heavy-duty game or app after using Safari. Your RAM memory may be depleted to 15MB or less. Your favorite app may unexpectedly quit because you don't have it enough. Use BOLT. Unlike Safari, which consumes 20MB or more total, BOLT is a lean web browser, and it uses almost no RAM. So you can still play favorite apps or games after using BOLT and without using Safari.

Private / Anonymous Browser

BOLT deletes your browsing history which may be remained in your Mac/PC and iphone/ipod. Don't put yourself in an embarrassing situation, when your family members, friends or coworkers stumble upon your browsing history, after you check out few sites made for grown-ups.
-- You may double check this by opening Safari after using BOLT. You history trace is squeaky cleaned.

Fast Copy Makes Copy & Paste on iOS Faster | Cydia

Remember when iPhone users couldn’t copy and paste on their devices? Back in the iPhone OS 1.x and 2.x days, that was one of the most serious issues Apple had to face when haters attacked. Back in those same days, Cydia developers released independent implementations of copy & paste to enable users to have a better workflow.

Apple then introduced copy & paste through a popup menu in iPhone OS 3, and Ryan Petrich released its popular Action Menu hack in Cydia to make it better, with more features and more powerful. Now, with iOS 4 it’s time to make copy & paste faster.

With Fast Copy, available for free in Big Boss’ repository, the annoying delay after you press a button in the copy & paste menu will be removed. I installed the tweak and I can confirm copying and pasting items feels snappier and more responsive then ever before, and I have Action Menu + Plus pack installed. We’re talking about a very small delay here, but once you install the tweak you can spot the difference.

I don’t see the reason why you shouldn’t install this if you’re running a jailbroken device. Highly recommended.

A Fun Todo list with gameplay, free for limited time, try it : Dunnit! - The Fun Todo List with Push Notifications (Productivity)

Dunnit! - The Fun Todo List with Push Notifications 1.3.2

Category: Productivity
Price: $3.99 -> Free, Version: 1.3.2
Dunnit!

Description:

Dunnit is a humble todo list app with a twist. As well as all the usual todo list features, Dunnit adds an element of gameplay. This gameplay provides you a small, but compelling, incentive to keep using the app, and ultimately makes you more productive and organized.

Some of Dunnit's many features include:

• Reminders via push notification
• Integration with Twitter and Facebook
• Achievements and leaderboards from OpenFeint
• Versatile organization via tagging
• Multiple task entry
• Repeating tasks
• Anxiety reducing organization
• Stunning design
• Intuitive interface

Dunnit has received a lot of positive press, some of which we've listed below.

WIRED Magazine, UK (July edition) - iPhone app Dunnit makes checklists competitive. By awarding points for ticking off tasks, it separates the "haves" from the "haven't yets".

Macworld - On its own, Dunnit would have been a strong to-do list program, but it went a step further and integrated Aurora Feint’s OpenFeint technology.

148apps - The addition of achievements in a productivity app really is a stroke of brilliance. [...] If you are looking for a new To-Do list app or are just trying to get your life together like myself, Dunnit! really is the way to go.

What's New

Version 1.3.1
- added French language
- Push notifications no longer in app purchase and absorbed into the price.

Version 1.3.2
- Improved start up speed a little
- Changed Twitter integration to use OAuth.

Important: Twitter have announced that from June 30th they will no longer accept basic auth API calls. This was the method Dunnit! communicated with Twitter. For you to continue using the Twitter integration in Dunnit after June 30th you will need to update to this version.

Once updating please take a moment to rate Dunnit! again. All our ratings get wiped after each update and we rely on getting rated again so people know what a quality app Dunnit! is. Thank you :-)

News: Survey shows iPad owners consume more media, are more receptive to ads

Described as iPod and iPhone compatible but obviously designed primarily to be used with the iPad, Jensen's new JiPS-250i Rocker ($100) is the second major-brand speaker dock to feature an iPad-ready mounting system. Rocker includes two total speaker drivers in its lightweight plastic base, which has enough inside to support some but not all of the angles that its large silver and black iPad cradle can tilt on. The cradle rotates, moving what's normally its supportive bottom -- with volume and power buttons, a power light, and an Infrared sensor for its included remote control -- 90 degrees to the right side, holding only unencased iPads inside. Jensen includes video-out, line-in, and power ports on Rocker's back, requiring the use of an included wall adapter for power; there's no battery compartment on the bottom. A free application adds a wide collection of features, ranging from an alarm clock and Internet Radio streaming to picture frame functionality.

PhotoSync for Lazy Auto-Syncs Your Photos to Your iPhone Over Wi-Fi [Downloads]

PhotoSync for Lazy Auto-Syncs Your Photos to Your iPhone Over Wi-Fi iOS and Windows-only: PhotoSync for Lazy is a desktop and iOS app combination that watches a folder on your Windows PC and syncs any photos inside of it to your iPhone automatically.

Syncing photos to an iOS device is kind of a pain. iTunes goes through an obnoxiously long, CPU-intensive process of converting all your pictures to a friendly size and format that the iPhone will like. Additionally, you have to plug in your iPhone and wait for the entire sync process (including backup) to take place. If you just want to get your freakin' photos on your iPhone, easily, with minimal effort, PhotoSync for Lazy is designed for just that purpose.

PhotoSync for Lazy Auto-Syncs Your Photos to Your iPhone Over Wi-Fi

It comes in two versions for your iOS device, free and paid ($3). The paid version has no limitations and the free version limits you to 50 photos, but it's a good way to test out the software to see if you like it. You'll also need to download this Windows app (direct download link) so it can watch a sync folder on your Windows PC.

PhotoSync for Lazy Auto-Syncs Your Photos to Your iPhone Over Wi-Fi

While there's no real configuration involved, PhotoSync for Lazy requires your PC and iOS device are on the same local network so it won't work if you separate the two. Aside from that, the only thing you really need to do is put photos in the watched folder and open PhotoSync for Lazy on your iOS device. From there, PhotoSync for Lazy will start loading the folders onto your device exactly as they're organized on your PC.

PhotoSync for Lazy is available right now for Windows and iOS. It costs $3 if you've got more than 50 photos to synchronize, otherwise you'll do just fine with the free version.
