Posterous to TwitPic Users: “Rescue” Photos with New Import Tool

Posterous is in the midst of an aggressive 15-day campaign to get users of other services such as Tumblr and Ning to switch to its blogging platform. Today the startup has set its sights on TwitPic with the introduction of a two-click TwitPic importer.

The TwitPic Switch to Posterous page instructs users to “rescue your photos from a TwitPic.” It’s a bold statement that attempts to position the service as a superior resting place for user photos.

The Posterous TwitPic importer is just as simple to use as each of the other import options. In this case, simply enter the URL of your TwitPic profile, complete the Twitter OAuth process and Posterous will begin the import process. TwitPic photos will be left intact, but copied over to Posterous. You’ll receive a notification e-mail when the import process is complete.

As we’ve previously noted, Posterous can be used in much the same way that Twitterers already use TwitPic, especially given that many Twitter mobile clients already include Posterous as a photo-sharing option. With the introduction of the Posterous TwitPic importer, the company hopes to convince holdouts to make the switch to a blogging platform that also moonlights as a Twitter photo-sharing service.

Posterous’s switch campaign is a brilliant way to drive home the utility of the service, even if it does attract the ire of competing services. So far, it has already gone after Vox, Xanga, Active Rain, Ning, Tumblr and now TwitPic users.

These are some pretty high-profile targets, and already Posterous is pretty pleased with the results. Vice President of Marketing Rich Pearson tells us that “activity is through the roof,” and that the campaign has been “very successful for both folks who are moving their content over to Posterous, and folks who already have an account but haven’t been back to Posterous in some time.”

iMovie for iPhone 3GS – there’s a hack for that

iMovie on iPhone 3GS

iMovie has been modified to run on iPhone 3GS, making the previously iPhone 4 exclusive app just a tad less exclusive:

David Romhan Torres: I just make iMovie for iphone 4 run on an iphone 3GS, it’s very simple just download it from iTunes, modify info.plist file and change the Minimum system version to 3.0.0 and front-facing-camera to false

If iMovie can run on an iPhone 3GS, why did Apple make it iPhone 4 exclusive? Probably for the same reason there’s no video recording or wallpaper on an iPhone 3G. Apple is very quick to cut off older hardware when they think it will have any impact at all on user experience. iPhone 4 has double the RAM and a faster processor and that’s what Apple decided to make the cut off point.

And just like 3rd parties came up with video recorders for the 3G, iPhone 3GS has had video editors for a while already (ReelDirector, obviously), and will obviously continue to do so. Just not Apple’s. It’s how they roll.

Taimur over at Redmond Pie gave the iMovie for iPhone 3GS port a whirl and you can check out the results in the video below.

Spirit Jailbreak Fix for iTunes 9.2 on iOS 3.1.3 and iOS 3.2

The best and the most easiest jailbreak tool has just been updated (unofficially?) to bring support for iTunes 9.2. Earlier when Apple released the final version of iTunes 9.2, it broke the compatibility with Spirit and so this new version brings the required fix to make it compatible with iTunes 9.2. However no new feature has been added. It still does not work with iOS 4 and iPhone 4. Only iOS 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 for iPhone 3GS, 3G, 2G, iPod touch, and iOS 3.2 for iPad is supported.

Posted Image

Instructions are still the same. You can follow our complete step by step guides to jailbreak your iPad, iPhone 3GS, 3G, 2G and iPod touch 3G/2G on 3.1.3 using Spirit.

For those of you with iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC model) and iPod touch 3G who upgraded to iOS 4, only to find out that you cant jailbreak it back can actually downgrade back to iOS 3.1.3 and then jailbreak it using Spirit. Step by step guide for downgrading your iOS device from iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3 can be found here (works only if you have SHSH blobs saved for 3.1.3).

Unlocking can be done on any baseband using Ultrasn0w 0.93, instructions for which is posted here.

MyWi 4.0 to Bring Wireless Tethering to iOS 4 [Jailbreak]

Let me clear this up straight. No, the phone you see in the screenshot is not a jailbroken iPhone 4, but rather a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, running iOS 4. The iMovie app you see is basically a “broken” port which was being tried to run on non-iPhone 4 devices but had issues in the end.

Posted Image

Coming back to topic, MyWi 4.0 for iOS 4 is almost ready! and will be out later today. This new version has many new features, including battery and power consumption options that can save about 30% to 40% of battery! There is also an option to disable the blue pulsing tethering bar on top, which you can convert it into a status bar icon.

Posted Image

MyWi 4.0 will of course require a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install and work. Stay tuned as we will let you know whenever it is ready – with a full guide on how to get it installed.

iPad Skins: Clothe And Protect Your iPad With Personality

Editor’s note: This is a guest post authored by Stephen Markas, Editor In Chief of iPadAccessories.com. Stephen’s article gives you great information about the different companies that make iPad skins.

The Apple iPad exploded into the technological scene with the power and the most diverse list of abilities imaginable, and the iPad is continuing it’s amazing success with over 3 million units sold already! The iPad’s price tag can get quite hefty, and as such, it’s  a tool that is worth investing in and merits care and protection to insure a long life.

New iPad protective skins are available to guard against every day bumps and scratches. To further enjoy the whole experience, tons of cool features are available to customize your iPad making it as unique as yourself.

Artistic decals are a must have addition to tailor the iPad to your personality. Here’s a review of some of the best iPad decals and protective skins on the market right now:

The invisibleShield by Zagg

First off is the king of iPad protection. This iPad protective skin is made with a super durable film, is completely transparent, and matches exactly to the size of your iPad. It protects the screen and back of the iPad from damaging scratches, even from jagged edges of metal objects, such as keys.

Another useful feature is that, since the material was originally developed to military grade specs, it is highly durable and guards the screen against corrosive substances like the accidental spray of cleaning fluids or the oils from fingers and hands. The invisibleShield enhances your visual enjoyment by reducing glare and smudges, making it a truly an amazing product and our favorite clear iPad protector on the market right now.

Gelaskins

However, perhaps you are looking to give your iPad a little more personality. GelaSkins have the two-fold purpose of providing defense against nicks and scrapes, while clothing your iPad in style and oozing personality out every port.

GelaSkins come in hundreds of pre-made varieties by top modern artists, and they also have the option to create your own skin design that is unique to you. Just upload your artwork or photos onto GelaSkins’ website and enjoy the endless opportunities to create and enhance the appearance of your iPad. GelaSkins use 3M technology for simple application and clean removal.

Invisible Defenders

Invisible Defenders skins accomplish a completely original look for your iPad. It shields your device from wear and tear while giving it a smooth celebrity appearance. Each skin comes complete with simple instructions for application.

The designs are printed on resilient 3M or AVERY vinyl that adheres to the iPad without air bubbles or sticky residue. The vinyl is also laminated with a transparent film, so the images will never fade, rub off, or scratch. Skins can be customized to fit your wants without canceling your warranty.

Also, Invisible Defenders provide application tape to help you align the skin perfectly to your device.  You never have to touch the adhesive with your hand, which causes the skin to lose it’s grip.

SkinIt iPad Decals

Finally, we have the SkinIt iPad decals. Similar to GelaSkins and Invisible Defenders, the creators of Skinit skins have designed 24 different categories of skins and release new skin styles every week. Some of these include sports, Disney, art, military, entertainment, seasonal, and American Idol. Or you can upload shapes, images, or text to customize your own skin.

All of Skinit skins are made of premium glossy vinyl and use a distinctive high resolution six color process. Then the design is covered with clear coating for extra protection.

In summary, unfortunately the iPads are prone to scratches and denting. As soon as you purchase your exciting new tablet, don’t leave it naked and exposed to the elements and dangers of everyday life.

Since the iPad cases that you choose are as much a fashion statement as they are a social statement, don’t hesitate to express your individual character and style on the iPad with the abundance of amazing iPad decals and protective skins available today.

First Looks: Incipio dermaShot for iPhone 4

Incipio's dermaShot ($20) is a reworking of its basic, budget silicone rubber case for past iPhones, designed of course to match the curves of the iPhone 4. Six colors are available, each single-toned with a matte finish, using cut-outs to expose the iPhone's cameras, headphone port, microphones, speakers and screen. Button protectors are integrated for the top and side controls. As the first case we've seen to include its own screen film protector, dermaShot also comes with a cleaning cloth and thin applicator card.

First Looks: SwitchEasy Trig for iPad

Though sleeve cases might or might not continue to be of interest to iPad owners going forward, SwitchEasy's new Trig ($40) scores a couple of points for originality: it allows you to convert a puffy sleeve for the iPad into a dual-angled video stand for on-the-go viewing. The soft-lined case has metal snaps that should be avoided on insertion and removal, enabling it to stay safely closed during carrying; you need to pull the iPad and flip the segmented design around to transform it for horizontal or video viewing purposes. Available in six colors, two of which have high vinyl gloss relative to the other faux leather four, Trig also includes a glossy screen protector, a cleaning cloth, and applicator card.

Normally priced at $99, they're currently selling them off for $49 if you pre-order. That $49 price is for the plain variety, but if you'd like an engraved one, then it'll set you back $69. [Grove Made]

iPhone 4 vs Flip Ultra HD vs iPhone 3GS Video Comparison [Video]

iLounge has posted a video comparison of the iPhone 4, the Flip Ultra HD, and the iPhone 3GS.
For the first time, iPhone 4 has the resolution to compete pixel for pixel against Flip’s higher-end recorder, and it has something Flip doesn’t: Tap to Focus during video, enabling the iPhone 4 to create depth of field effects, but also to render some scenes softly relative to the Flip since the latter device’s fixed-focus lens offers consistent sharpness without depth of field capabilities.
Take a look below...

How to add PDFs to iBooks using Dropbox

iPad iPhone iPod

This brief tutorial will guide you through the steps required to add PDF files to iBooks on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, using Dropbox.

Update: it has been pointed out to me that this method only works if you have an iPad – and that it does not work on an iPod Touch or iPhone.

One solution that may work for you if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch is to copy the link to the PDF from the Dropbox app, then paste it in Safari. At that point you’ll be prompted to open it, and you can select iBooks. This method won’t work if you’re running iOS 4 on your iPhone or iPod Touch until Dropbox updates the app to work with iOS 4. Thanks to kaushalmodi over at Lifehacker for the tip!

Another solution for folks using and iPhone or iPod Touch (including those using iOS 4) is to use Safari and navigate to the web version of your Dropbox account. From there, you can tap the PDF (in Safari) and it will prompt you to download and then open with iBooks.

Note: If you aren’t near the PC/Mac you use to sync your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch with, using Dropbox is a great way to get PDFs into iBooks. If you are near the PC/Mac that you use to sync your device with, this tutorial might be faster for you to get those PDFs onto your iPad (iPhone or iPod Touch).

Dropbox is a fantastic service that allows you to store files (2GB for free, or $9.99 per month / $99.00 per year for 50GB) online. It also syncs those files across all of the computers you own that have the Dropbox software installed, and, you can access all of your stored files via a web browser on any computer. For more info on the Dropbox service, see their overview or sign up here.

After you’ve signed up for Dropbox, you’ll need to install the Dropbox app on your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. It’s free, and can be found in the iTunes Store here.

  1. Lets get started. Add a PDF file (or several) to your Dropbox account. Once the PDF has been uploaded, open up the Dropbox app on your iPad (iPhone, iPod Touch…).

  2. Tap the “Dropbox” button in the very upper-left corner of the app. Navigate through your Dropbox folders to locate the PDF file that you want to add to iBooks. Select it by tapping it once.

  3. Depending on the size of the PDF (and your current Internet connection speed) it may take a while for the PDF to load.

  4. Once it has loaded, tap the “Open with” button on the very upper right corner of the Dropbox app.

  5. Select iBooks from whatever may be listed (will vary depending on which apps you have installed).

  6. Your PDF is now saved in iBooks and will be available for you to read any time you want :)
